West Valley Fire Academy is one of the most successful Fire Training facilities in the State of Utah. Our program is accredited through Utah Valley University and the Utah Fire and Rescue Academy. Instructors are currently working Combat Firefighters, HAZMAT Technicians, and EMS Providers with many years of experience. Our Academy prides itself on being able to effectively train new firefighters for the "Real World" career; not just the ability to pass a state exam.

Captain Lee Monsen

Captain / Paramedic / Tech Rescue

Captain Lee Monsen worked for West Valley City Fire Department for 32 years. For 15 of those years he was a Captain and was the training facilitator for the department. Captain Monsen was one of the departments first paramedics. 


Captain Monsen was the Program Coordinator for West Valley Fire Academy and one of the founders of the academy.

In 2021 we all lost a good friend when Lee passed away.

Captain Darin Monsen is an acting Captain for Utah Fire Athority. He has worked for UFA for 20 years now and 7 years as a Captain.


As a Tech Rescue and HazMat Tech he is eager to share his knowledge and skills with the new cadets.

Mike Montgomery attended WVFA as a recruit and then an intern before becoming an instructor for the academy.


He formaly worked for Ogden City Fire Department and currently works for South Jordan City Fire Department as a Firefighter / A-EMT / PIO.


Mike has created this website along with all the photography and videos.


Firefighter Ben Lynch
Firefighter / EMT / Tech Rescue / RTF

Ben Lynch has been a firefighter with the West Jordan Fire Department for 5 years. In those five years he has become a Heavy Rescue Tech in Ropes, Extrication, and Confined Space. He is also an EVO Instructor.

He recently had the opportunity to use his wildland skills when he was deployed to California to help with those devastating fires.


Firefighter Aubrey Freiberg
Firefighter / Paramedic

Aubrey attended West Valley Fire Academy as a recruit and went onto participate in the intern program before becoming an instructor for the academy.

Shortly after the academy Aubrey was hired on as a Firefighter/AEMT for Lehi Fire Department. She has graduated from Paramedic School and is excited to continue her career in Lehi as a Paramedic. Within her time in the fire service, Aubrey has spent two years working as part of a Truck Company and is now working on an Engine.

She is excited to share her knowledge and watch the new cadets begin a rewarding career in the fire service.


Jake McMichael
Engineer / Tech Rescue / EMT

Jake McMichael has been in the fire service since 2014. Jake is an Engineer for Weber Fire District, he is also a heavy rescue tech and is a part of the Weber County Heavy Rescue Team.

Jake also owns Firefighter Jakes Leather which manufactures Firefighter equipment. Jake has been an instructor for West Valley Fire Academy since 2016.

Brian Christensen

Captain Brian Christensen currently works for Unified Fire Authority (UFA). Brian has worked in the fire service for 19 years including 15 years as an Engineer in Midvale City. He has extensive experience in all types of fire and medical related calls and is certified in Fire Training, Hazmat, Extrication, High Angle, Confine Space, Rope Rescue, AEMT and many others.


In this role as Medical Specialist, he developed CME training for over 525 of Unified Fire Authority's field personnel. Brian currently is the captain at station 118 for UFA.

Wade Rigby has been a firefighter for 9 years and has instructed for West Valley Fire Academy for 7 years.


Right out of the academy Wade worked part time for Kaysville City Fire Department  for 2 years before he started his career with Ogden City Fire Department full time. During his time with Ogden Fire he became a rescue technician and was a member of their tech rescue team for 2 years before leaving for South Davis Metro Fire Agency where he has now been for  2 years and is assigned to the Hazmat team as a Hazmat technician.

Captain Brian Davies
Captain / Hazmat Tech / EMT

Brian Davies grew up in Southern California, married with 2 daughters. He played football for Utah State University and graduated with two Bachelors Degrees.  Brian was hired on with Weber Fire District in 2011.  Became Captain at Weber Fire in 2018.  Currently stationed as Captain for a ladder company and heavy rescue.  


Firefighter Ben Lloyd
Firefighter / Tech Rescue

Ben has been serving the citizens of West Valley City for a little over 7 years. He is part of the Technical Rescue team, an Advanced EMT and a Senior Firefighter. 


Ben loves to teach this class. He is very passionate about his profession and takes pride in his teaching. He loves the brotherhood and tradition of the fire service. He is knowledgeable and cares about the students. He is a great asset to our academy!


Dave Dirkmaat
Firefighter / Truck Ops Specialist / EMT

Dave Dirkmaat graduated from West Valley Fire Academy in 2014. He started career his career at West Valley City Fire Department and 

currently work for Salt Lake City Fire Department on Truck 2 covering the west side of downtown SLC.

Has been an instructor at West Valley Fire Academy since 2018 and has also been on the training cadre for Salt Lake City Fire Academy and is a member of the Truck Ops Tactical Ventilation Cadre for Utah Valley University’s Winter Fire School.  


Dave is also a SLC Truck Ops Specialist

Ryan Christensen
Captain / Haz Mat Tech / A-EMT

Captain Ryan Christensen has been with Park City Fire District since 2000.  Previous to that, he was a firefighter with Midvale Fire Department beginning in 1995.   

Ryan was a firefighter for two years and was promoted to a Tillerman on Truck 36 for Park City for seven years before promoting to Engineer.  He also has experience as a HazMat Tech.  Ryan is currently a Certified Fitness Coordinator (CFC) and involved in the Task Performance Testing for the Park City Fire Service District.

Ryan obtained his Associate’s degree in Fire Science in 2012.

Engineer Matt Meranda currently works for the West Jordan Fire Department. He has worked for West Jordan for 8 years and is currently the engineer on B-Shift at Station 52. Matt has been a hazmat technician for 6 years and is the current Hazmat Program Director for West Jordan.


Firefighter Michael Buchanan
Firefighter / Haz Mat Tech / Paramedic

Michael attended the West Valley Fire Academy as a recruit, then as an intern. He got hired part-time with Unified Fire Authority right out of the Fire Academy before he was hired full-time with the West Valley City Fire Department. He joined the Haz-Mat Team as a Haz Mat Specialist in 2018 and became a Paramedic in 2020. 

Michael was been deployed to California to help fight wildfires and has been on several serious Haz Mat incidents. 


The purpose of the internship program is to provide potential firefighter candidates an opportunity to continue demonstrating skill and knowledge in "real world" scenarios. The program also provides an avenue for dedicated students to showcase their skills and willingness to become a career firefighter.
